Tonen for Claude

Tonen lets people comment on your running site, each comment pinned to the element it's about, and lets Claude fix what they ask. This plugin brings Tonen into Claude Code and Claude's apps.

Install

In Claude Code, in the terminal:

claude plugin marketplace add tonenapp/tonen-plugin
claude plugin install tonen@tonen

In your first session the plugin asks whether Claude Code may keep it up to date by itself. Say yes and it updates in the background, as Anthropic's own plugins do. Later you can turn that off under /plugin, Marketplaces, tonen.

Then open your site's folder in Claude Code and say what you want, in your own words: "let my client comment on this site". Claude sets it up, shares your dev server, and opens your browser when Tonen needs you to sign in or confirm something. Nothing to type in the terminal.

Fixing comments and hearing @Claude use Tonen's own connection for Claude, so people see Claude's work as Claude's: the first time, sign in with /mcp (Tonen, then Authenticate), or claude mcp login plugin:tonen:tonen in the terminal. If you connected Tonen before with claude mcp add, remove that connection first (claude mcp remove tonen): Claude Code keeps it and hides the plugin's. In the desktop app's Code tab or the editor extensions, add the marketplace tonenapp/tonen-plugin under Plugins, then install Tonen.

In Claude on the web, the desktop app or your phone: Customize, Plugins, Add marketplace, tonenapp/tonen-plugin, then install Tonen and connect it on its Connectors tab.

What you get

  • /tonen:setup adds Tonen to your project: the project, named in a small tonen.json your team commits, Tonen's script tag in your pages (on localhost too, so a teammate who runs the project sees the bar), who can comment on each branch, which Claude asks you, your confirm in the browser of each deployed address, and your dev server shared so people comment on it from anywhere. It also adds Tonen to the repository's Claude Code settings, so your team installs it with claude plugin install tonen@tonen.
  • /tonen:add-reviewers asks people to comment: by email, on one of your project's branches (Tonen mails each a link to it, once you confirm it in your browser), or, for a branch at Anyone with the share link, that branch's share link, which you make on the branch's page in Tonen (or Claude asks for, once you confirm it) and send yourself.
  • /tonen:fix works through the comments one at a time: it finds the element in your code, fixes it, checks it, and tells the reviewer what changed.
  • @Claude on your site. In Claude Code, in a repository with Tonen (its tonen.json or script tag), Claude listens for you while you work (anywhere else, ask Claude to listen, and it does so in the background): mention @Claude in a comment, and it answers in the thread, or asks you in Claude Code before it changes anything. A line above the prompt says when it listens and how many comments are left to fix. Ask Claude to stop listening, and it does. Listening needs Claude Code; Claude's other apps read and answer comments when you ask.
  • The branch you have checked out. Comments belong to a git branch of your project. As your session starts, and whenever you switch branches while it runs, the plugin tells Tonen which branch you have checked out, so your localhost and your local site show that branch's comments.
  • Your dev server, shared. In Claude Code on macOS or Linux, ask Claude to share your project's dev server (say, localhost:5173): your project's members and the reviewers added to the branch you have checked out then open it from anywhere and comment on that branch, while your session runs. A line above the prompt shows the address and how many people viewed it. Ask Claude to stop sharing, and it does.
  • Tonen's helper. Setup, invites and sharing run the Tonen CLI for you. The first time, Claude Code asks you, downloads it into ~/.tonen/bin and checks it, and your browser opens for you to sign in. Anything only you may do (sharing for the first time, adding reviewers, a branch's share link) waits for your Confirm on Tonen. The helper updates with the plugin; a tonen you installed in your terminal updates with tonen upgrade.
  • /tonen:remove takes Tonen out of your site.

What it may do without asking

Listening calls two of Tonen's tools, projects and wait_for_mention, so the plugin lets those two run without a permission prompt, and its own stop_listening, share_local_site and stop_sharing (sharing asks you itself, for each port it hasn't shared in that session), and tonen_cli, which runs the Tonen CLI for your errands (Tonen asks you in the browser for what only you may do). Telling Tonen the branch you have checked out runs the helper by itself, once it's on your computer and signed in; it never downloads it, signs in or opens your browser for that. Every other tool asks as usual. Comment text is treated as a request about your project, never as instructions to Claude.

33// Tonen's plugin for Claude Code: it listens for the member's mentions
34// (@Claude) for the whole session and hands each one to the session as a
35// turn of its own, so no wait holds up their session. It starts by itself in
36// a repository whose pages load Tonen's bar for one of the member's projects,
37// and whenever Claude calls `wait_for_mention` (the member asked it to
38// listen): the plugin takes that call over and listens in the background
39// instead. While it listens, a dim band above the prompt says so; Claude Code
40// draws a plugin's status line as a warning (⚠), so only what needs the
41// member goes there.
42//
43// It holds Tonen's `wait_for_mention` itself, through the session's own
44// connection to Tonen (the server .mcp.json lists, or the same server added by
45// hand: the engine runs one). `via: "plugin"` makes Tonen answer in JSON for
46// the plugin and leave listening out of the prompt. The mention reaches the
47// model framed as the plugin's message, never as the member's own words: it
48// was typed on a website.
49//
50// It also shares the member's dev server as a project's local site when Claude
51// calls `share_local_site` (share.ts, which runs the Tonen CLI's `tonen
52// share`); the band shows each one shared. And it tells Tonen which branch
53// the repository has checked out (`tonen branch`), as the session starts and
54// whenever a turn of its listening sees it change, so the member's localhost
55// and local site show that branch's comments.

29//
30// The person is asked in Claude Code before each port and project the
31// session hasn't shared yet, and told when it downloads the helper. That is
32// consent, not the security boundary: the first share of a local site from a
33// computer waits for its member's Confirm on the Tonen's own /confirm page,
34// which the CLI asks for and the plugin opens in the browser. Asking per port

36// a call Claude was talked into (a mention typed on a site) could share any
37// port of this computer without a word to the person.
38//
39// The CLI's lines (`@tonen/contracts/cli`) drive it: `open` opens the browser
40// (a sign-in or a confirm), `ready` gives the address (Claude's answer, and
41// the band's line), `viewers` the band's count, a `warning` plain words for
42// the band and Claude. When the CLI exits it starts again after a back-off,
