Deleting outside the project folder requires the user's approval (Bash, PowerShell, cmd, subagents, MCP).

A Claude Code mod: deleting anything outside the project folder requires your approval.
Before Claude runs a shell command (Bash, PowerShell, Monitor) or an MCP tool that deletes, delete-guard works out which paths the call would delete. If all of them lie inside the boundary folder (by default the folder the session was started in) or in one of your allowed folders (see Configuration), nothing changes and Claude decides as usual. If any of them lies outside, or cannot be determined, delete-guard opens its own dialog:
| Choice | What happens |
|---|---|
| Erlauben (allow) | The call runs this once. |
| Immer erlauben (always allow) | The call runs, and you pick a folder to free for good: the target's folder, or walk up with Höher … (and back with Tiefer …) to the one you want. See Allow a folder from the dialog. |
| Immer erlauben (genau dieser Befehl) (always allow this exact command) | Offered instead when a target could not be determined. The call runs, and the same command runs without a question from then on. See Allow an exact command. |
| Ablehnen (deny) | The call is refused; Claude sees the refusal and the reason. |
(The dialog text is currently in German.)
On any machine (Linux, macOS, Windows), in a terminal:
claude plugin marketplace add systemNEO/claude-code-mods
claude plugin install delete-guard@claude-code-mods
The first line adds this repository as a marketplace, the second installs the mod for your user, i.e. for all projects and sessions on that machine. On Windows this works the same in PowerShell, cmd or Git Bash; the mod runs inside Claude Code itself and needs neither Node nor Python.
Alternatively, inside a running Claude Code session:
/plugin install delete-guard --marketplace systemNEO/claude-code-mods
Sessions that are already running pick up the mod with /reload-plugins.
| Option | Default | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
boundary | empty | The folder inside which deleting needs no approval. Empty: the folder the session was started in. An absolute path or ~ for your home folder, e.g. ~, ~/projects, /srv/work; on Windows ~\projects or C:\Users\you\projects. |
allowedFolders | empty | More folders inside which deleting needs no approval, in addition to the boundary, e.g. /tmp, ~/Downloads; on Windows C:\Temp, ~\Downloads. Separate several with commas. Immer erlauben in the dialog adds folders here (see below). |
unresolved | ki | What happens when a target cannot be worked out from the command text: ki (a model works it out, the mod checks the answer), fragen (always the dialog), liste (refuse and ask Claude for an explicit list of paths). See Targets it cannot work out. |
aiModel | sonnet | The model for unresolved: ki, as an alias (sonnet, haiku, opus) or a full id. |
The boundary replaces the start folder; it does not add to it. With ~/projects, a session started in ~/projects/app may delete anywhere in ~/projects, while a session started in /tmp/demo asks even for its own files. The boundary folder itself, like the start folder, counts as outside: deleting ~ with the boundary ~ asks. A relative path (projects) or a ~ that cannot be resolved is ignored and the start folder applies.
Both options work the same way inside: everything below the folder is free, the folder itself is not (deleting /tmp itself asks even with /tmp in allowedFolders). Relative paths are ignored.
When every target of a call is a known path outside, the dialog offers a third choice, Immer erlauben (always allow). It lets the call run and then asks which folder to free for good:
| Choice | What happens |
|---|---|
The folder of the target, e.g. /tmp/claude-1000/x | That folder is added to allowedFolders. |
Its parent folder, e.g. /tmp/claude-1000 | That folder is added instead (more is free from then on). |
| Höher … (higher) | Shows the next two folders further up, until just below the root. |
| Tiefer … (lower) | Goes back down to the folders shown before. |
| Esc (close the question) | Nothing is saved; the call still runs this once. |
Other: a path you type, e.g. /tmp | That folder is added, if it is absolute (or ~/…) and not a root. |
The root of a drive or file system (/, C:\, \\server\share) and registry paths are never offered and never saved, and a folder is not offered when a target could not be determined (see the next section for that case). When there is only one folder to choose from, it is saved without the second question. Remove a folder again with /plugin configure delete-guard@claude-code-mods or in settings.json.
When a target could not be determined, there is no folder to free. The dialog then offers Immer erlauben (genau dieser Befehl): the call runs, and the mod remembers the command. It runs without a question again only while all of this stays the same:
/delete-guard-befehle lists the remembered commands, /delete-guard-befehle entfernen <Nr.> removes one, /delete-guard-befehle leeren removes all. The list stays on this machine (the mod's own store), up to 100 commands.
Set them in one of three ways:
/plugin configure delete-guard@claude-code-mods. echo '{"boundary": "~/projects"}' | claude plugin configure delete-guard@claude-code-mods --values-stdin
echo '{"allowedFolders": "/tmp, ~/Downloads"}' | claude plugin configure delete-guard@claude-code-mods --values-stdin
The second line replaces the list; options left out keep their values.
The same line works in PowerShell. In cmd, leave out the single quotes: echo {"boundary": "~\\projects"} | claude plugin configure delete-guard@claude-code-mods --values-stdin. In JSON, a backslash is written twice: "C:\\Users\\you\\projects". claude plugin configure delete-guard@claude-code-mods alone shows the current value.
~/.claude/settings.json: "pluginConfigs": {
"delete-guard@claude-code-mods": { "options": { "boundary": "~/projects", "allowedFolders": "/tmp, ~/Downloads" } }
}
An empty value ("") goes back to the start folder.
The setting is global. All three ways write it to your user settings (~/.claude/settings.json, under pluginConfigs), so it applies to every session in that environment, whichever folder it starts in:
/plugin configure or the CLI) reloads the mod by itself; Claude Code shows delete-guard: options changed — reloaded./reload-plugins.~/.claude it was written to. WSL and native Windows on the same PC each need their own setting.If /plugin configure answers declares no userConfig options, the running session still has a version older than 0.4.0 loaded: update the plugin, run /reload-plugins, and try again.
Update by hand (on every machine that has the mod):
claude plugin marketplace update claude-code-mods
claude plugin update delete-guard@claude-code-mods
The first line fetches the current state of this repository, the second installs the newer version. Then run /reload-plugins in sessions that are already running (or restart them); new sessions load it automatically.
Update hint from the mod itself: once a day, shortly after a session starts, delete-guard reads the version on GitHub. If it is newer than the installed one, it shows a notice with the two commands above. It never installs anything on its own: a deletion guard that silently loads new code would be a risk of its own. To turn the hint off, set DELETE_GUARD_NO_UPDATE_CHECK=1 (it is also off with CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_NONESSENTIAL_TRAFFIC=1).
Automatic updates by Claude Code: Claude Code can keep a marketplace and its plugins up to date by itself. For marketplaces like this one it is off by default. To turn it on, open /plugin → Marketplaces → claude-code-mods → Enable auto-update, or add "autoUpdate": true to the marketplace entry in ~/.claude/settings.json:
"extraKnownMarketplaces": {
"claude-code-mods": {
"source": { "source": "github", "repo": "systemNEO/claude-code-mods" },
"autoUpdate": true
}
}
Claude Code then checks in the background during a session and reports "Plugin updated … Run /reload-plugins to apply". Turning it on means new versions of this repository are installed without asking you each time.
For maintainers: Claude Code installs a new copy only when the version in .claude-plugin/plugin.json changes. Bump it with every change you publish, otherwise claude plugin update reports "already at the latest version".
claude plugin disable delete-guard@claude-code-mods
claude plugin uninstall delete-guard@claude-code-mods
Once installed, the mod applies to every Claude Code session on that machine, in every project and folder (it is installed with the user scope).
/reload-plugins once.claude -p (scripts, automation): the mod is active, but nobody can be asked there, so deleting outside the start folder is denied.One exception: each environment with its own Claude Code configuration (~/.claude) needs its own installation. On a Windows PC that runs Claude Code both inside WSL and natively on Windows (PowerShell or cmd), these are two separate installations; run the two install commands once in each of them. Cloud sessions on claude.ai do not run on your machine and are not covered.
"Start folder" below means the boundary folder: the folder the session was started in, or the folder set in Configuration.
| Situation | What happens | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| Every target lies inside the start folder | No dialog. The usual rules and permission mode decide, as without the mod. | ||
| A target lies outside the start folder | Dialog listing the outside targets and the command. | ||
A target cannot be determined (a variable without a value, $(cat list), `cat list \ | xargs rm, Invoke-Expression $x, cd -`) | Depends on unresolved: AI check, then dialog if anything is left (default); always the dialog; or refused with a request for an explicit list. See Targets it cannot work out. | |
The target is the start folder itself (rm -rf ., rm -rf /path/to/project) | Treated as outside: dialog. | ||
Wildcards (*, ?, […], {a,b}) | What counts is the folder before the first wildcard: ../* is the contents of .. (outside), build/* the contents of build (inside). | ||
.* with find and others | May match .. in some shells, so the parent folder counts too. | ||
| A path inside the project whose symlink leads outside | Outside where the deletion follows the link (rm -rf link/), inside where it only removes the link (rm link). | ||
| A path written outside that resolves into the project | Still outside. Resolving a path never turns it into "inside". | ||
The command moves first (cd, pushd/popd, Set-Location, env -C, git -C) | Paths are measured from the new folder. | ||
The move may fail (cd dir; rm …, `cd dir \ | \ | rm …`, a new line) | Paths are measured from both the old and the new folder; only cd dir && … counts as certain. |
The move happens in its own shell (( cd dir ), a pipeline element, cd dir &) | It ends there, as in the shell: later commands are measured from the old folder. | ||
Any permission mode (default, acceptEdits, auto, bypassPermissions) or an allow rule such as Bash(rm:*) | The dialog still opens for targets outside. | ||
| The usual rules already deny the call | Stays denied, no dialog. | ||
| Subagents | Same rules. The dialog says a subagent wants to delete. | ||
| Erlauben | The call runs, without a second permission prompt. | ||
| Immer erlauben | The call runs, and you pick a folder (the target's folder or one above it) that is free from then on; see Allow a folder from the dialog. | ||
| Immer erlauben (genau dieser Befehl) | The call runs, and the same command (same text, folder, shell and scripts) runs without a question from then on; see Allow an exact command. | ||
A target lies in a folder from allowedFolders | Like inside the start folder: no dialog. | ||
| Ablehnen | The call is refused; Claude is told the user denied it. | ||
| Free text typed into the dialog ("Other") | Counts as a denial; the text is passed on to Claude as the reason. | ||
Nobody can be asked (claude -p, the SDK, dialog dismissed) | Denied. | ||
| The check itself fails | Denied (fail closed). | ||
Scripts started by the command (bash x.sh, ./x.sh, source x.sh, .\x.ps1, x.cmd) | Read and checked one level deep if they lie in the project or a temp folder. Installed tools elsewhere (e.g. ~/.nvm/nvm.sh) are not read. | ||
MCP tools with delete/remove/unlink/rmdir/trash/erase in their name | Their path arguments are checked like rm -r. Such tools without path arguments (e.g. deleting a cloud document) are left alone. |
For every target outside, the dialog says what is actually there, so you can judge the size of what goes:
• rm: /tmp/x/vgl/1280-hell-2 (Inhalt)
↳ ganzer Inhalt des Ordners: 14 Dateien, 2 Ordner, 3,1 MB — z. B. a.png, b.png, sub/, …
• rm: /srv/data/old
↳ ganzer Ordner samt Inhalt: mehr als 20.000 Dateien, 312 Ordner, 4,2 GB — z. B. …
It tells apart the whole contents of a folder, a pattern that matches only part of it (3 von 40 Einträgen (Muster *.png)), * that leaves hidden entries alone, a whole folder with everything in it, a single file, a link (only the link goes), and a target that does not exist. Counting stops after 20,000 entries or 2.5 seconds and then says "mehr als". Up to four names are listed as a sample.
Some deletions are computed when the command runs: a variable read from a file, $(ls …), ${!ref}, a pipeline into xargs rm. The option unresolved decides what happens then.
ki (default): a model works it out, the mod checks the answer. The mod sends the command and the list of open targets to the model set in aiModel (through Claude Code's own client, as a separate request with no history and no tools). The model answers in JSON: the concrete paths for each open target and whether they follow from the command text alone. The mod then checks that answer itself, and the call goes through without a question only if every check passes:
~ left in it;rm -rf "$S/vgl/$n/*" with a known S, every answer must start with $S/vgl/; an answer that leaves that prefix, also through .., is rejected;It then shows a toast (KI-geprüft, alles im freien Bereich: …) and writes a line to the transcript.
One answer cannot be checked by the mod: "deletes nothing". For f=$(grep -l …); python3 -c "…open('$f')…" the code cannot be completed from the text, but the model can see that it only reads a file. It may say so ("loescht_nichts": true, certain, no paths) only if the code is fully in the command, contains no call that deletes, empties or overwrites, starts no program or shell command, and uses unknown values only as data, never as code (eval, exec, os.system, subprocess, sh -c, decoded or downloaded code). The mod accepts that and says so in the toast (KI-geprüft, löscht nichts (…)) and the transcript line. If the model names paths anyway, they are checked as above. The residual risk here is the model's judgement alone, for example an unknown value that a shell splices into the code and that turns out to be code itself. In every other case the dialog opens, now with what the model found for each open target (with the preview) and why it was not enough. The command is passed to the model as data; text in it that addresses the model is to be ignored, and the checks above do not rely on the model's judgement. The residual risk is a model that names a wrong value which still passes every check; the answer is cached per command for the session.
fragen: no model, always the dialog.
liste: the call is refused, and Claude is told to work out the paths first and then call rm / Remove-Item with an explicit list of finished paths. Known targets outside still get the dialog as usual.
Every open target is logged with its cause (kind and construct, for example param-op ${!…}, subst $(ls …), env $OUT, input read), a count and an example command. The log stays on this machine (the mod's own store).
/delete-guard-lernen hands the log to Claude as a task: find the working copy of this repository, extend the parser for every cause that can be worked out from the command text alone (with tests for inside, outside and a way out through the new construct), leave causes that depend on run time as they are, run the tests, bump the version, and ask before committing. /delete-guard-lernen leeren clears the log.
Every decision other than "all inside, nothing to do" is logged as well: the answer in the dialog (erlaubt, immer (Ordner), immer (Befehl), abgelehnt with your free text), and what went through or was refused without a question (auto: KI-geprüft, auto: Befehl gemerkt, abgelehnt: liste), each with the command, the reasons, the result of the AI check, the folder and whether a subagent asked. The last 300 decisions are kept on this machine.
/delete-guard-protokoll shows the last 20 with a count per answer, /delete-guard-protokoll alle all of them, /delete-guard-protokoll leeren clears the log. /delete-guard-lernen hands the decisions to Claude together with the learning log: what you keep allowing is a candidate for the parser (only if it can be worked out from the command text), what you deny although the AI check would have passed it is a reason to make the check stricter. Commands may contain secrets (tokens on a command line); they stay in the local store like the learning log.
The mod never changes its own code. A deletion guard that rewrites its rules unattended could be talked out of its job; the change goes through Claude, the tests and your approval. At the start of each session the mod checks the logged examples again and drops what it can now work out by itself.
| Environment | Commands that count as deleting | |
|---|---|---|
| Bash (Linux, macOS, WSL, Git Bash) | rm, rmdir, unlink, shred, trash/trash-put, gio trash, rimraf, find -delete / -exec rm, fd -x rm, xargs rm (including the source of the pipeline), rsync --delete / --remove-source-files, git clean, git rm, git worktree remove, dd of=, mkfs, wipefs | |
| PowerShell | Remove-Item and its aliases (rm, ri, del, erase, rd, rmdir) with -Path, -LiteralPath, arrays and every free argument; pipelines (`gci … \ | Remove-Item, % { Remove-Item $_ }); .Delete(), [IO.File]::Delete, [IO.Directory]::Delete; Remove-ItemProperty (registry); Clear-RecycleBin; Invoke-Expression` |
| cmd.exe | del, erase, rd, rmdir, also behind if exist … and for … do | |
| Wrappers and nesting | sudo, doas, env, timeout, nice, nohup, npx, pnpm dlx …; bash -c, sh -c '…' _ arg, eval, heredocs, here-strings, `echo … \ | bash, $(…), backticks; powershell -Command / -EncodedCommand, pwsh, cmd /c, wsl …` |
| Inline code | python -c, node -e, perl -e, ruby -e, php -r, deno eval with delete calls (shutil.rmtree, os.remove, fs.rmSync, unlink …) |
Paths are resolved the way the shell would: ~, $HOME, $env:TEMP, %APPDATA% and other environment variables, assignments earlier in the command (also after do, then, {), for loops, $(pwd), $(dirname "$0"), $(cd dir && pwd), Join-Path, and the Bash parameter operators on known values: ${v#pat}, ${v##pat}, ${v%pat}, ${v%%pat}, ${v/pat/rep}, ${v//pat/rep}, ${v/#pat/rep}, ${v/%pat/rep}, ${v:off:len}, ${#v}, ${v^^}, ${v,,}, ${v:+alt}, ${v:?msg}. Patterns are read as globs; quoted parts match literally. What cannot be reproduced exactly (extglob, & in a replacement, ${!ref}, arrays, $((…))) stays unknown.
Every other command runs as normal.
\ and the drive rootOn Windows, a path that starts with \ is relative to the root of the current drive, not to the current folder. A stray \* after a delete command therefore points at C:\. delete-guard treats all of these as the drive root, and so as outside:
| Written | What Windows does with it | delete-guard sees |
|---|---|---|
Remove-Item \* -Recurse, del /s /q \*, rd /s /q \ | Root of the current drive | C:\ → dialog |
Remove-Item build \*, del /q build \* (stray space) | build and the drive root | C:\ → dialog |
Remove-Item / -Recurse (PowerShell) | Root of the current drive | C:\ → dialog |
C: | Current folder on drive C: | C:\ → dialog (never "the project") |
C:* | Contents of the current folder on C: | C:\ → dialog |
cd \; Remove-Item *, cd /d C:\ & del /s /q * | Moves to the root first | C:\ → dialog |
..\..\..\..\* | .. stops at the root | C:\ → dialog |
$env:SystemDrive\*, %SystemDrive%\* | C:\* | C:\ → dialog |
\\?\C:\*, \\.\C:\ | Long-path and device prefixes | outside → dialog |
Microsoft.PowerShell.Core\FileSystem::C:\* | Provider-qualified path | C:\ → dialog |
HKLM:\…, HKCU:\…, Env:\…, Cert:\… | Registry and other providers | outside → dialog |
\\server\share\x | Network share | outside → dialog |
D:\* | Root of another drive | D:\ → dialog |
rm -rf /*, rm -rf /c/* (Git Bash) | Root of the Git install, or of drive C: | C:\ → dialog |
C:\x, /c/x (Git Bash), /mnt/c/x (WSL), c:\X | The same place | compared as the same path, case-insensitively |
The same holds inside nested calls: powershell -Command "Remove-Item \*", pwsh -EncodedCommand …, cmd /c "rd /s /q \", iex "Remove-Item \*".
