README

thimble is a Claude Code plugin for making sense of large volumes of agent outputs. It gives Claude tools to cite, visualize and label your data, and gives you an interface to understand and verify Claude's work faster.

[!CAUTION]

  • thimble is in alpha. It changes daily, so expect bugs and rough edges.
  • thimble is not an official Anthropic product.

For feedback, bug reports, or anything else, please reach out to @mjoerke. I would love to hear from you!

Features

  • Cards: interactive graphs of your data, drawn in the terminal, that you can click and ask about. v draws one for the last answer.
  • Citations: every claim points to the code output or file line that shows it, and a second Claude checks each one against your files.
  • Labels (l): records sorted into categories by a rule or a model's reading, which you can open and correct.
  • Coverage (r): how much of the folder Claude has read, and what it never opened.
  • Claims (c): everything the session has concluded, as a map, with why each claim holds and what was corrected. They are found when you ask (f in the pane), or after every reply when you turn that on.
  • Squeeze (s): the last answer, shorter or longer, or with its interpretation and background.
  • Side threads (t): ask about a passage or part of a card without derailing the session.

Installation

With Claude (recommended)

claude "install thimble from https://github.com/safety-research/thimble"

Claude asks whether you want the terminal plugin, the browser workbench, or both, and helps with anything missing. Agents installing thimble: follow CLAUDE.md.

Manual installation

git clone https://github.com/safety-research/thimble
cd thimble
scripts/install.sh

scripts/install.sh --no-browser installs the terminal plugin alone. INSTALL.md covers upgrading from 0.9 and what to do when something does not work.

Usage

Terminal plugin

Run claude in a folder with files you'd like to analyze. thimble is on in every session. Click thimble above the prompt, or run /thimble-settings, to turn features on or off; /plugin turns thimble off.

When thimble does something wrong, /thimble-fix <what should work differently> has Claude change your own copy of thimble. In a shell, thimble file issue N posts fix N as a GitHub issue and thimble file pr N opens a pull request with its code; each shows you the text first.

thimble in the terminal: a card of each agent's activity during the incident, a side thread on one agent, and a reply with checked citations

Browser workbench

Run thimble-browser in a folder of files to open the browser workbench.

the browser workbench answering whether agents reviewed before approving: a chat answer with citations, an agent transcript colored by an activity label, a timeline of every agent's labeled work and approvals, and a table of what each approver ran

Requirements

Claude Code, macOS or Linux, Python 3.10+ and Node.js 22.18+. The browser workbench also needs uv and about 1 GB of disk.

Security & Privacy

thimble is a research prototype. Please report any security issues privately to @mjoerke. The plugin runs inside your Claude Code session: it collects no data of its own, its model calls go through your session, and Claude's card code runs in Anthropic's sandbox runtime with no network.

11// hooks serve it (its tool calls, its steps, its end); a fork spawned from a timer has
12// the whole plugin as its caller, and none of the plugin's hooks would see it.
13// forkOf(agentId) {kind, agentId} of a fork thimble started, or null (main, or another agent)
14//
15// A module hears its fork's end in its own `turn.complete` hook ({agentId, reason, answer, refusal}), where
16// forkOf(e.agentId) names the kind. (Claude Code follows `$` only into functions a file declares or imports, so a
17// list of handlers that take `$` cannot be called from here.)
18// A fork's end never reaches main's conversation: its task notification or hand-back is dropped at prompt.submit.
19// Claude Code counts a fork as a background agent of the session, and the line that closes a turn of main's that ended
20// while forks still ran says `Waiting for 5 background agents to finish`, then counts their time in the next turn's
21// (`Cooked for 6m 11s` under a 5 s reply). The person's next prompt does not wait for them. So the line that waits only
22// on thimble's forks reads as a finished turn of its own time (turnLine), and the next turn's line its own time.
23// Each fork's turns are filed under its kind in the session's events (telemetry claimAgent). Which agent is which fork
24// is kept in $.state as soon as Claude Code names the agent, so a reload of the plugin still knows them; the newest

core/pane.ts 333 lines
1// pane.ts: thimble's one side pane. openPane shows a kind of pane with its arguments in place of what the pane showed,
2// and closePane closes it. One `ui.render` hook draws the pane, by the kind it shows, with the drawing's elements:
3//
4// evidence ../marks/evidence.tsx one mark's evidence
5// labels ../labels/pane.tsx the folder's labels and their records
6// coverage ../panes/coverage.tsx what Claude read of the folder
7// settings ../panes/settings.tsx the three switches
8// claims ../claims/seam.ts the conversation's claims (c)
9// threads ../threads/seam.ts the side threads (t)
10// thread ../threads/seam.ts one side thread: what it is about, its turns, its input
11//
12// Under the evidence, labels, coverage and claims panes stands the pane's side thread (threads/seam.ts threadUnder):
13// its conversation and an input bar that asks it about what the pane shows, as 0.10's side panel had under each pane.
14//
15// The way back: the pane keeps a trail of the panes it showed before this one (trail.mjs). A pane opened while the
16// pane is open goes on top of it (a citation opened from a side answer stands over that answer); the row at the top
17// names what esc does there, as the bar names a key (`esc back to claim`, on the trail's first pane `esc close`), a click
18// that does the same: Claude Code closes a pane on esc (and on its close mark), and while the trail holds a pane the
19// ui.close hook goes back to it instead.
20//
21// Docked beside the conversation, the pane keeps its input bar and its key row at its bottom: the drawing above them
22// gets the rows left over (a pane that lays itself out reads them as its `bodyRows`), the side thread's conversation
23// follows it, and when the two are taller than that room they scroll in it with the wheel and ↑ ↓ (the ui.scroll
24// hook), the end shown when the conversation grows. In a pane whose drawing fits, ↑ and ↓ press the
25// pane's k and j (the previous and next claim, the coverage row above or below): Claude Code gives a plugin no arrow
26// keys of its own, but sends ↑ and ↓ in a pane that can scroll as scrolls, and a row under the frame that is never
27// shown keeps the pane scrollable.
28//

1// tell.ts: what Claude reads of thimble's work outside its own turns: the one way a report of thimble's reaches main's
2// model (the guidance is guidance/guidance.ts; a tool's answer is the tool's). Every feature tells main through here,
3// never through a session.append or prompt.context hook of its own. A module keeps a text under a key with
4// tellAtNextPrompt (or adds a line to one with tellLine); the person's next prompt that starts a turn of main's carries
5// the texts as context beside the prompt (prompt.submit `context`), which Claude reads as thimble's report and the
6// person never sees as typed. One text per key, the latest wins (a reply's check is told once, as it ends), and each
7// is sent once.
8//
9// The texts that wait are kept in $.state (merged with update(), so two modules that keep a text at once both land),
10// so a reload of the plugin does not lose them, and in the conversation's kept folder (core/env.ts), so a resumed
