README

cache-keeper

A one-line bar above the prompt in the Claude Desktop Code tab:

Cache 51 min remaining. Usage resets at 5:20 pm, 12% used

  • Cache: live countdown to prompt-cache expiry, in whole minutes (<1 min under a minute). Yellow near expiry, red when expired.
  • Usage: when your 5-hour plan window resets (in your local time) and the percent used so far. It appears once Claude has reported a reading.
  • Near expiry (default 5 minutes left) the bar turns yellow and Compact and Handoff buttons show on it. There is no popup.
  • Compact runs /compact.
  • Handoff runs /cache-keeper:session-handoff, then /clear, then pastes the handoff into the prompt box for you to send. It does not clear unless the reply starts with ## Handoff.

/cache-keeper on | off | status shows or hides the bar. The choice is remembered.

Settings (/plugin > Installed > cache-keeper > Configure options)

SettingDefaultMeaning
ttlSeconds3600Cache lifetime. 3600 (1 hour) on a Claude subscription within plan usage; 300 (5 minutes) with an API key or usage credits.
warnSeconds300The bar turns yellow and shows the buttons when this many seconds remain.

Claude Code's own promptCacheTtl setting or CLAUDE_CODE_PROMPT_CACHE_TTL variable (5m or 1h), when set, overrides ttlSeconds.

Requirements

  • Claude Code 2.1.287 or later, in the terminal or in the Desktop app's Code tab. On 2.1.283 the bar did not appear in the terminal after login.
  • Check with claude --version; update with claude update.

Notes

  • Nothing leaves your machine: no network or process calls.
  • If you go over your plan's limit and Claude Code starts using extra usage credits, the main conversation's cache drops to 5 minutes. The bar cannot detect that.
  • Anthropic measures cache lifetime from the start of the last request, and so does the countdown.

Manual checklist (Desktop app, Code tab)

  1. Open a session. After you send a prompt and get a reply, the bar above the prompt shows Cache 60 min remaining counting down.
  2. Usage resets at H:MM am/pm, NN% used appears after a reply once a reading exists.
  3. To see the near-expiry state quickly, set warnSeconds to 3590, send a prompt, and wait about 10 seconds. The bar turns yellow and Compact and Handoff appear. Set warnSeconds back to 300 afterwards.
  4. Press Handoff. The model replies with a block starting ## Handoff, the session clears, and the handoff text appears in the prompt box. Press Enter to send it.
  5. /cache-keeper off hides the bar. /cache-keeper on brings it back.
