overclaim-guard

A Claude Code mod that stops Claude from publishing claims nobody measured.

I use Claude to write posts, store pages and video captions for my products. AI writing drifts toward big promises. In one day of review I found these in drafts that were about to go out:

  • "Zero missed inquiries" for an AI receptionist that, by design, hands unknown questions to a human.
  • "Sync drift is gone" on a video that had no audio track at all.
  • "Perfect reading accuracy" from a single run on 20 synthetic invoices.

Each one would have been read by customers as a promise. This mod stops the write before it happens and asks Claude for the measured fact instead.

What it does

  • Checks published writing before it is written. When Claude writes or edits a file in a place where published writing lives (/content/, /posts/, /blog/, /drafts/, README.md and more, all configurable), it looks for overclaiming words.
  • Checks posts typed into a browser. When Claude types or pastes text through a browser tool (Claude in Chrome, the built-in browser), the same check runs, so a post to X, YouTube or a blog editor is covered too.
  • Stops and explains. Claude receives the words it used, with the text around them, and an instruction to rewrite with what was measured or to say what is not known.
  • Lets an intended word through, once. If the word is meant (a measured "100% of 40 runs"), ask the person and run /overclaim-allow. The next stopped write passes, and only that one.

Default words: 100%, guaranteed, guarantee, zero risk, never fails, always works, perfect, flawless, bulletproof, and Japanese 完全, ゼロ, 確実, 絶対, 必ず, 爆速. Matching ignores case.

Where published writing lives/content/, /posts/, /blog/, /drafts/, /newsletter/, /announcements/, /press/, /public/*.html, /site/*.md, README.md, CHANGELOG.mdComma separated path fragments. * matches within one folder.
Check text typed in the browseronAlso check posts typed or pasted through browser tools.

What it reads, runs, and sends

  • Sends nothing over the network. It does not upload, log, or collect anything.
  • Runs nothing. No commands, no files read or written.
  • Reads: the text of the write, edit, or browser input that Claude is about to make.
  • Keeps: one value in Claude Code's plugin store, the one-time allowance from /overclaim-allow.
  • Hooks:
  • tool.call on Write, Edit, and browser tools that type, paste or fill
  • session.start and command.run, for /overclaim-allow

Limits

  • It is a word check, not a fact check. It cannot tell whether a number is true. It catches the words that most often hide an unmeasured number.
  • A file outside the configured places is not checked. Code comments and tests are left alone on purpose.
  • If the plugin store cannot be read, the write is stopped rather than let through.

Tests

claude plugin test .

There are 9 tests: the rules on their own, plus the whole mod running in Claude Code's test engine. Each of three guards was broken once on purpose to confirm its test fails for the right reason:

  • case-insensitive matching
  • checking published places only
  • the one-time allowance
