README

Cockpit

A mod for Claude Code that adds a supervision pane: watch what Claude is doing without reading every message, and approve read-only second opinions from Codex.

The interface text is in Hebrew (right-to-left). The code, the prompts and this README are in English.

What it does

  • Task and steps. Claude reports the current task and its plan steps through a tool (mcp__cockpit__report), and the pane shows them with their status. The top line says the state in a few words: working, quiet, or waiting for you.
  • Changed files. The files changed in the project's git working tree, refreshed while you work.
  • The gate. The last run of the project's check (typecheck, lint, build or tests), passed or failed. A failure is held in the pane until you mark it handled.
  • Codex proposals. Claude can propose sending a prompt to Codex (OpenAI's coding agent, on your ChatGPT subscription) as an independent review: of a plan, of finished work, or of a research question. Each proposal waits in the pane. You pick the model and reasoning effort, then approve or decline. Codex always runs read-only, and its answer goes back to Claude.
  • Handoff. What the pane holds when a session ends is offered to the next session in the same project.
  • The button. A [Cockpit] button under the prompt opens the pane, as does /cockpit. It is dim at rest and shows ◆ when something waits for you.

Long text in the pane is shown as a short summary, with "read all" opening the full text in a reader pane.

Requirements

  • Claude Code with mod support (function-hook plugins). Built and tested on Claude Code 2.1.302.
  • For Codex proposals: the ChatGPT desktop app on macOS (its bundled Codex CLI is used), or codex on your PATH. Runs use --ignore-user-config, and the model and effort are passed explicitly.

Install

Clone the repo and point CLAUDE_CODE_PLUGIN_DIRS at the mod folder, in the env of ~/.claude/settings.json:

{
  "env": {
    "CLAUDE_CODE_PLUGIN_DIRS": "~/path/to/cockpit/mods/cockpit"
  }
}

Separate several folders with :. A new session loads the mod. In an interactive terminal session, saving a file reloads it. A desktop-app session keeps the code it started with until a new session.

Layout

  • mods/cockpit/ — the plugin:
  • hooks/register.tsx — the hooks, and every function that uses the engine API.
  • hooks/lib.ts — pure functions, tested without the engine.
  • types/index.d.ts — the mod's state contract.
  • tests/ — run with claude plugin test.
  • shared/ — helpers shared between mods (right-to-left text, colors, time, glyphs, the footer row, long text). Each mod keeps a copy in hooks/shared/. Edit shared/ only, then run scripts/sync-shared.sh.
  • scripts/gate.sh — the gate: checks the shared copies, then validates, type-checks and tests each mod.
  • AGENTS.md — working rules and engine pitfalls, for people and coding agents.
  • docs/ROADMAP.md — the plan and the status of each round.

Development

scripts/gate.sh

The type check runs against the API types the engine writes next to the mod when a session loads it (mods/cockpit/.claude-plugin/types/, not committed), so load the mod in a session once before running the gate.
