README

model-advisor

A Claude Code mod that checks each prompt before it runs and tells you when a different Claude model or effort level would do the job better, or for less of your plan.

Most of the time it stays quiet. When a change would help, it holds your prompt and asks:

Deep legal work: notice to an outside party. Weekly limit 42% used. Which setup should run it?

1 Best: Opus 5.5 · high
Strongest on legal drafting and reasoning. About 2x the usage of Keep.
2 Balanced: same as Best
Legal letters are never routed down to save usage.
3 Keep: Sonnet 5.5 · medium
Fine for a draft you will review closely; weaker legal reasoning. No re-read.

Pick one and your prompt runs on it. Your pick stays in force until the next pick you accept, until you change the model or effort in the picker yourself, or until you type /picks clear.

Install

You need Claude Code 2.1.294 or later. In a terminal session of Claude Code, type:

/plugin install model-advisor --marketplace Blockyogi/model-advisor

Answer y to add the marketplace, choose the user scope, and fill in the one setting (below). It then runs in every session, including the desktop app's Code tab.

The setting: about your work

The judge reads one or two sentences about you to rate your prompts. For example:

Indie iOS developer; also writes marketing copy and handles client contracts.

Leave it empty and the judge assumes a general mix of work. You can change it later with /config.

Commands

CommandWhat it does
/picksShows whether the advisor is on and what is running
/picks clearDrops the advisor's pick; requests run on what the picker shows
/picks off / /picks onTurns the advisor off or on for this session
/picks logShows recent judgments, what you chose, questions you dismissed and picks you overrode

How it decides

  1. Claude Haiku 5.5, at low effort, reads your prompt and the last few turns (what you typed, which tools ran, which files changed, what errored, and the assistant's last message) and reports facts about the work: what it does (look something up, ship something already decided, edit, build, debug, research, draft, plan), how much it touches, whether it is new ground, whether you can check it at a glance, and flags such as "changes production", "a fix already failed" or "an outside audience reads it". It never rates how hard the work is and never sees model names.
  2. Fixed rules in code turn those facts into a tier (light, standard, deep or frontier), then into Best and Balanced. Some of them:
  3. Legal letters, tender submissions, production changes, public copy and debugging after a failed fix are never routed to a cheaper setup.
  4. Mechanical work (installing a build, pushing, scheduling approved posts) is never upgraded. A go-ahead or a status reply ("done, I've signed in") carries the work it resumes.
  5. Haiku is never offered for your main session; light work gets Sonnet 5.5 at low.
  6. Fable is offered only after Opus at xhigh has also fallen short, and never for research.
  7. A move to a cheaper setup needs two judge runs that agree; otherwise your setup stays.
  8. In a long conversation, a cheaper model has to pay back its one-time re-read within two prompts, so the advisor prefers an effort change.
  9. Balanced gets cheaper as your weekly or 5-hour limit fills up.
  10. It asks only when a change would really help. Small nudges, like Opus medium to Opus high, stay silent, except for work that is never routed down (legal letters, tenders, production changes, public copy, a failed fix).
  11. When an attempt fails, it offers a step up. It counts a failure when you say so ("still broken", "didn't work", "same error", "try again"). It also counts one when the turn before ended with tests still failing or a command failing after an edit, and your next prompt carries on that work. The first offer keeps your model and raises the effort one step, so nothing is re-read. If the next prompt shows a failure too, it offers a model step: Sonnet to Opus at high, Opus to xhigh, then Fable, never for research.

If your prompt names its own setup in a line or sentence that starts with "Recommended" or "Model" (for example Recommended: Opus 5.5 at high effort. or Model: Opus 5.5, high effort.), that becomes Best, and the advisor's own lighter pick is offered as Balanced. A model named anywhere else is read as part of the request.

Subagents are routed without asking and without a judge call, since they start fresh and lose nothing by switching. Each goes by its type and the job its brief gives it:

  • Searches (Explore, or a brief that says it is read-only): Haiku 5.5 at medium.
  • Reviews (copy-reviewer, the Impeccable finish reviewer, or a read-only review or audit): Sonnet 5.5 at high. Haiku skips checks, and reviews exist to check.
  • Other work (general-purpose agents that edit or write): the parent's model, at medium.
  • Inside a task that is never routed down (legal, tenders, production changes, a failed fix): the parent's setup, whatever the job.

A call that names its own model or effort keeps it. Other agent types (design-critic and claude-code-guide, which name their own model; Plan; the editing agents of other plugins) run as their definition says.

Good to know

  • The picker doesn't move. A mod can't change the model picker in the desktop app, so after you accept a pick, a status line next to the picker shows what is really running, for example running Opus 5.5 · high (undo: /picks clear).
  • Your prompts stay with you. The judge runs through your own Claude Code sign-in; nothing is sent anywhere else. It costs about $1 a month of plan usage at heavy use.
  • It fails open. If the judge is slow or errors, your prompt runs unchanged.
  • Headless runs are skipped. Prompts in a claude -p run are not judged, since no one is there to answer.
  • The log holds no prompt text. /picks log keeps the judge's facts, the tier, the picks and your choice, with the session id and prompt number, so you can see where the advisor over-asks.

You report facts about the WORK; you never rate how hard it is and never choose a model. About the person: ${about.trim() || DEFAULT_ABOUT}
57
58Describe the work THIS request needs now, not the size of the project or the length of the session. When the request is a go-ahead, an answer to the assistant's question, or a status reply ("done", "it's connected", "start them now"), describe the step it lets the assistant carry on with, as the recent turns show it: "done, I've signed in" after the assistant asked for a sign-in means carrying on with the step that needed it.
59
60Fields:
61
62work: at most 12 words on what the assistant must now do, e.g. "rerun the failing sign-up test", "draft a reply to the builder's lawyer".
63
64continuation: true when the request mainly approves, answers or reports status so the assistant can carry on the work in the recent turns. A new task that only refers back ("the same way", "like the last one") is false.
65
66action: the main thing the assistant must do now, one of:
67- ship: carry out an act already decided, with no real thinking: push, merge, run a known command, install or launch a build, schedule or send text already written and approved, rename or move files, rename a variable or function to a name the request gives. A job that needs choices along the way (cleaning up an inbox, sorting folders) is edit or build; one that needs text written first is draft.
68- lookup: find and report a fact at hand, or answer a quick question: a status, a figure, a file, a setting, how to do a known thing, what a term means.
69- answer: advise, recommend or judge by reasoning over what is known.
70- edit: change something that exists, as the person specified: a line, a setting, a form, an earlier draft per their notes.
71- build: make or change code, files or documents along a written plan, a spec or a known pattern.
72- debug: find out why something is broken or wrong, and fix it.
73- research: gather and weigh information from several sources.
74- draft: write new text: a post, letter, email, reply, deck, brief or document.
75- plan: plan, design or decide an approach.
76
77scope: one (one item, file, fix, source or act), few (two or three), many (more than about three files, documents, sources or separate acts, or a job with several parts).
78
79novelty: known (a known pattern, a written plan or spec, or the person's own instructions) or new (new ground: an open design, strategy or positioning question with no plan yet). Fixing, organizing or rewriting along the person's notes is known.
80
81checkable: true when the person can check the result at a glance.
82
83flags, every one that holds:
84- unknown_cause: something is broken or wrong and the cause is not known yet ("why", "only on", "sometimes", "intermittent").
85- failed_before: an earlier attempt at this same work failed ("still", "didn't work", "same error", "again").
86- outside_audience: what this request produces goes to someone other than the person: a client, a court, a regulator, a government office, the other side of a dispute, or the public.
87- relied_on: someone will act on the result as correct: a decision, a filing, a payment, a client deliverable.
88- must_reconcile: numbers must reconcile or tie out.
89- underspecified: the request is vague and the assistant must make real choices the person has not made.
90- production: carrying it out itself deploys to real users, or changes a live website, live app backend, live database, DNS, payments, sign-in or credentials. Writing code, building, running tests, or installing a build on the person's own device or simulator is not production.
91- money: carrying it out moves real money or files something financial.
92- irreversible: carrying it out deletes, migrates or sends something that cannot be undone.
93
94risky is about the ACT, not the subject: true only if carrying out this request itself changes production, moves money, or destroys data. Writing code about payments is not risky; running the payment migration is.
95
96domain: code (general software), ios, website, spreadsheet, ledger, finance (equity research and filings), research (web or document research), legal (legal, compliance, disputes), tender (government or client tenders), copy (public copy, posts, marketing), admin (lookups, files, settings, email), other. A go-ahead keeps the domain of the work it resumes.
97
98ongoing: true when this starts or continues a task likely to span several more requests; false for a quick aside or one-off question.
99
100Examples (action, scope, novelty, flags):
101- what does HTTP 429 mean: lookup, one, known.
102- rename 40 screenshots to date order: ship, one, known.
103- rename the variable userId to accountId in this snippet: ship, one, known.
104- rename getUser to fetchUser across the codebase: ship, many, known.
105- "push it" after the changes were approved: ship, one, known; continuation.
106- fix the "Contcat" typo in the footer: edit, one, known; checkable.
107- add a validated contact form to the Next.js site: build, few, known.
108- the app crashes only on TestFlight builds, find out why: debug, few, known; unknown_cause.
109- migrate the site from Pages Router to App Router: build, many, known.
110- draft a LinkedIn post from this brief: draft, one, known; outside_audience.
111- RERA legal notice to the builder for delayed possession: draft, one, known; outside_audience, relied_on; domain legal.
112- reconcile the March bank statement to the ledger: edit, few, known; must_reconcile.
113- tabulate 5 competitors' pricing pages: research, many, known.
114- how should we position the company on the homepage: plan, few, new; underspecified.
115
