README

cache-warmer

A Claude Code mod that keeps the prompt cache warm while you are away from a session.

Claude Code caches your conversation so each turn re-reads it at a small fraction of the input price. The cache expires after 1 hour on a Claude subscription, or 5 minutes on an API key. Come back after it expires and your next turn writes the whole conversation to the cache again, at 2x the input price for the 1 hour cache. On a 200k-token conversation that one turn costs as much as about 40 warm turns on Opus 5.5.

cache-warmer sends a tiny request shortly before the cache expires. The request re-reads the conversation, which resets the cache timer. It stops as soon as the pings would cost more than the rewrite they prevent.

Install

At the prompt of a Claude Code terminal session:

/plugin install cache-warmer --marketplace akaike-byob/cache-warmer

From a shell:

claude plugin install cache-warmer --marketplace akaike-byob/cache-warmer

Answer y to add the marketplace, then pick a scope. The user scope turns it on for every session.

In the desktop app: click + next to the prompt box, then Plugins, Add marketplace with akaike-byob/cache-warmer, then Add plugin.

Requirements:

  • Claude Code 2.1.300 or later. Mods are an early-access feature and their API may change between releases.
  • An interactive session. The mod does nothing under claude -p.

Usage

There is nothing to run. After your first turn, the status line shows the cache state:

cache warm 52m (1h) · 2 pings, 10% of a rewrite
  • 52m: time until the cache expires.
  • (1h): the cache lifetime the mod detected.
  • 2 pings, 10% of a rewrite: pings since your last turn, and their cost as a share of one cache rewrite.

Commands:

CommandEffect
/cache-warmer or /cache-warmer statusShows the state.
/cache-warmer offStops pinging in this session.
/cache-warmer onStarts pinging again.

When the mod stops on its own, the status line says why, for example cache warmer stopped: pings cost as much as one cache rewrite. Your next turn starts it again.

Options

Set them in /config under cache-warmer, or in settings.json under pluginConfigs["cache-warmer"].options.

OptionDefaultMeaning
cacheTtlautoauto detects the cache lifetime. Set 1h or 5m if detection is wrong for your setup.
maxPings00 stops when pings cost as much as one rewrite. A positive number stops after that many pings instead.
minContextTokens20000Conversations smaller than this are not warmed.

How it works

The ping

The mod calls $.model.fork. A fork re-sends the session's own conversation, system prompt and model, plus one line: "Reply with one dot." The request matches the cached conversation exactly, so it is billed as a cache read and resets the cache timer. The reply is thrown away. Nothing is added to your conversation.

When it pings

Every 15 seconds the mod compares the clock with the last time the cache was used: the end of your last turn, or the start of the last ping. It pings 5 minutes before a 1 hour cache expires, or 90 seconds before a 5 minute cache expires. It never pings while a turn runs.

If the clock is already within 15 seconds of expiry, for example after your laptop slept, the mod stops without pinging. A ping that late would arrive after expiry and pay for a full rewrite.

When it stops

Each ping's cost is measured from its usage and priced at your model's rates. The mod stops once the next ping would push the total past the cost of one rewrite: conversation tokens × (cache write price − cache read price).

Stopping there keeps your worst case at twice the cost of a perfect guess:

  • If you come back before the budget runs out, the pings cost less than the rewrite.
  • If you never come back, you lost at most one rewrite's worth of pings.
ModelCache read pricePings per idle stretch, 1 hour cacheIdle time covered
Sonnet 5.5, Opus 5.50.05x inputabout 39about 36 hours
Fable 5.10.025x inputabout 79about 3 days
Haiku 5.5 and others0.1x inputabout 19about 17 hours

On a 5 minute cache the counts are lower (24 for Sonnet 5.5 and Opus 5.5), and they cover about 1.5 to 3 hours.

It also stops when:

  • A ping writes more than it reads, which means the cache had already expired.
  • The fork fails with an API error, an empty reply, or an abort.
  • The conversation is smaller than minContextTokens.

Cache lifetime detection

No mod event reports the cache lifetime, so the mod applies Claude Code's own rules, in this order:

  1. FORCE_PROMPT_CACHING_5M set: 5 minutes.
  2. CLAUDE_CODE_PROMPT_CACHE_TTL set to 1h or 5m: that value.
  3. The promptCacheTtl setting: that value.
  4. A claude.ai subscription login: 1 hour. If a usage limit is at 100%, 5 minutes, because usage past the plan limit gets the 5 minute cache.
  5. ENABLE_PROMPT_CACHING_1H set: 1 hour.
  6. Otherwise: 5 minutes.

If detection is wrong for your setup, set the cacheTtl option.

Cost and quota

Each ping is a real API request. On an API key it costs money: about 0.05x the input price of your conversation on Sonnet 5.5 and Opus 5.5. On a subscription it counts against your plan usage. Anthropic does not publish how cache reads count toward plan limits.

Measured on Claude Code 2.1.300 with Sonnet 5.5:

  • After the second turn of a session, a ping read the whole conversation and wrote 28 tokens.
  • A ping right after the first turn also writes about 10k tokens. Claude Code ends its first request with a block of context, and the next request, ping or turn, writes it again.
  • With no ping, the cache had expired 70 minutes after the last turn. With a ping at 50 minutes, the cache was still warm at 70 minutes.

Privacy

The mod reads no files and makes no network calls of its own. Its only request is the fork, sent to the same API and account as your session. It reads these environment variables: FORCE_PROMPT_CACHING_5M, CLAUDE_CODE_PROMPT_CACHE_TTL, ENABLE_PROMPT_CACHING_1H.

Uninstall

/plugin uninstall cache-warmer

Development

Run it from a checkout:

claude --plugin-dir /path/to/cache-warmer

Check and test:

claude plugin validate .
claude plugin test .

Claude Code writes the API types to .claude-plugin/types/ the first time it loads the mod. After that, tsc -p . type-checks the mod. That folder is generated and ignored by git.
